I grew up smack dab in the middle of Canada in good ol' friendly Manitoba. I went to photography school in Winnipeg,
worked with a local photojournalist and fell in love with telling stories through photography. I worked as a photojournalist in Winnipeg for a few years before packing up shop with my partner, Amanda, en route to the land of the rising sun. We spent two years in Japan, falling deeply in love with the country and it's wonderful people and took the opportunity to travel throughout Asia during our time there. Eventually it was time to come on home to the True North, Strong and Free and
this time, Toronto. I've worked as a freelance photographer and photo editor for various media outlets and my photographs have appeared in numerous publications both nationally and internationally. My photojournalistic style lends itself perfectly to photographing weddings since telling a story by capturing the feel and emotion in every moment is what it's all about.
If the idea of combining candid photography with creative portraiture is something you're looking for, then I'm sure we're going to get along great!
We've been together for nearly a decade and decided it's about time to make it official. She once told me to never pop the question on the jumbo-tron at a sports game. So of course I made note of that. Good thing Wrigley doesn't have one! She said yes on a gorgeous afternoon in the bleachers at Wrigley Field after the Cubs beat those lowly Cardinals. Now I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and I couldn't be happier!
For some people photography is their hobby. Obviously for me it's a career, but there are plenty of things that keep me busy when I don't have a camera in my hands. I jump at any chance to spend time out of the city whether it be camping, hiking, fishing or simply hanging out on the dock with a few beers. I also play hockey, softball, basketball, golf and snowboard. I am an avid woodworker, love to cook (and eat) and even taught myself how to make leather goods.
He can be a handful and a pain in the butt but we love him dearly. There is no ball or a stick that he won't chew and no cat or raccoon that can be his friend. He is Jake. Our 5 year old Weimaraner/Lab. He's a special guy, my alibi and my accessory to the crime! We spend a big chunk of time wandering aimlessly in the woods taking photos and chasing squirrels and if there is a spot to drop in a fishing line or have a quick fetch and swim we're bound to find it.
Nearly every photographer I know has a camera collection of some sort. It comes with the territory. There is always a new toy to play with and test out. I was lucky enough to be introduced to photography before phones and e-readers had cameras. The experience of shooting and developing your own film and the magic that is the darkroom is something that everyone should experience. Not all of my classic cameras get used daily but when they do, it reaffirms why I love taking photographs.
