Jesse Johnston is a photographer. A photojournalist. A storyteller.
He candidly seizes all of the precious moments that pass by in an instant so they can be relived again and again, for years to come. On your first, fifth and twenty-fifth anniversary you will curl up with your partner, children and grand-children,
look back at your wedding photos, and relive the joy and love that you felt on your wedding day.

Weddings

So much hard work and scheduling goes into planning a wedding. Buying a dress or suit, picking a caterer and venue, buying invitations, booking hair and makeup artists... the list goes on. Once the day arrives and the party goes down just as planned, the last of the guests leave, the band is gone, the beer and wine bottles are empty, the gown is packed up and the tux has been returned, the one thing you will be able to look back on time and time again, for years to come, are the photographs that tell the story of your special day.

Memories live in photographs. Photographs help memories last forever.

Photojournalism

Over the years I've had the chance to photograph compelling stories with fascinating people in some fairly interesting places.

Filipina Hostess

Photo essay on clubs in Japan that cater to busy men seeking companionship with women who are predominantly from foreign countries such as the Philippines.

Portfolio

A collection of images from my years working in photojournalism. Sports, spot news, street photography, portraits and anything else that has made for a nice photo.

Yakyuu

For high school players in Japan, baseball is more than just a game. They are on the field six or seven days a week. This is a story about one of these teams.

The Great Outdoors

It's hard not to be energized by the stunning beauty of Mother Nature. Whether I'm just out for a stroll in the woods, paddling a canoe at sunset or enjoying the ocean breeze I am continuously in awe of the beauty that surrounds us. I may never become a professional landscape photographer, far from it in fact, but I will never stop being inspired by the great outdoors.

About

me

I grew up smack dab in the middle of Canada in good ol' Friendly Manitoba. I went to photography school in Winnipeg, worked with a local photojournalist and fell in love with telling stories through photography. I worked as a photojournalist in Winnipeg for a few years before packing up shop with my partner, Amanda, en route to the land of the rising sun. We spent two years in Japan, falling deeply in love with the country and it's wonderful people and took the opportunity to travel throughout asia during our time there. Eventually it was time to come on home to the True North, Strong and Free and this time, Toronto. I've worked as a freelance photographer and photo editor for various media outlets and my photographs have appeared in numerous publications both nationally and internationally. My photojournalistic style lends itself perfectly to photographing weddings. Telling a story by capturing the feel and emotion in every moment is what it's all about.  If the idea of combining candid photography with creative portraiture is something you're looking for, then I'm sure we're going to get along great!

Amanda

We've been together for nearly a decade and decided it's about time to make it official. She once told me to never pop the question on the jumbo-tron at a sports game. So of course I made note of that. Good thing Wrigley doesn't have one! She said yes on a gorgeous afternoon in the bleachers at Wrigley Field after the Cubs beat those lowly Cardinals.  Now I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and I couldn't be happier!

Hobbies

For some people photography is their hobby. Obviously for me it's a career, but there are plenty of things that keep me busy when I don't have a camera in my hands. I jump at any chance to spend time out of the city whether it be camping, hiking, fishing or simply hanging out on the dock with a few beers. I also play hockey, softball, basketball, golf and snowboard. I am an avid woodworker, love to cook (and eat) and even taught myself how to make leather goods.

Jake

He can be a handful and a pain in the butt but we love him dearly. There is no ball or a stick that he won't chew and no cat or raccoon that can be his friend. He is Jake. Our 5 year old Weimaraner/Lab. He's a special guy, my alibi and my accessory to the crime! We spend a big chunk of time wandering aimlessly in the woods taking photos and chasing squirrels and if there is a spot to drop in a fishing line or have a quick fetch and swim we're bound to find it.

Cameras

Nearly every photographer I know has a camera collection of some sort. It comes with the territory. There is always a new toy to play with and test out. I was lucky enough to be introduced to photography before phones and e-readers had cameras. The experience of shooting and developing your own film and the magic that is the darkroom is something that everyone should experience. Not all of my classic cameras get used daily but when they do, it reaffirms why I love taking photographs.
